How to Connect AirPods to Xbox Series X

George Nathaniel By George Nathaniel May 20, 2025 12 Min Read

As a gamer who loves the crisp audio quality of Apple AirPods, I was thrilled to find ways to use them with my Xbox Series X. However, I quickly learned that connecting AirPods to an Xbox isn’t as straightforward as pairing them with an iPhone.

The Xbox Series X doesn’t natively support Bluetooth audio devices like AirPods due to its proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol. But don’t worry, you can still enjoy your AirPods’ immersive sound and microphone capabilities with a few workarounds.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through every method I’ve tested to connect AirPods to the Xbox Series X, ensuring you get the best gaming audio experience. Whether you’re a casual gamer or a competitive player, these steps will help you integrate your AirPods seamlessly.

What Makes a Gaming Experience Satisfying: 6 Tips

Why Connecting AirPods to Xbox Series X Is Tricky

The Xbox Series X uses a proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol for its controllers and headsets, which isn’t compatible with standard Bluetooth audio devices like AirPods.

This design choice prioritizes low-latency, high-quality audio for gaming but limits direct Bluetooth connectivity. Microsoft doesn’t officially support AirPods pairing, so you’ll need to use creative workarounds to bridge the gap.

I faced this challenge myself when I wanted to use my AirPods Pro for late-night gaming sessions without disturbing my household. After researching and testing various methods, I found reliable solutions that deliver excellent sound quality, spatial audio, and even microphone functionality.

Connect AirPods via the Xbox App on Your Smartphone

One of the easiest ways I’ve found to use AirPods with the Xbox Series X is by leveraging the Xbox app on a smartphone. This method routes game audio and party chat through your AirPods via your phone, making it a convenient option if you already have the app installed. Here’s how you can set it up.

  1. Pair Your AirPods with Your Smartphone
First, I make sure my AirPods are connected to my iPhone. Open the AirPods case, press and hold the setup button on the back until the status light flashes white, then pair them via your phone’s Bluetooth settings. If you’re using an iPhone, the setup animation should pop up automatically—just tap “Connect.” For Android, navigate to Bluetooth settings and select your AirPods.

  2. Download and Log In to the Xbox App
If you haven’t already, download the Xbox app from the App Store or Google Play Store. I log in with my Microsoft account, ensuring it’s the same account linked to my Xbox Series X. This step is crucial for seamless connectivity.

  3. Enable Remote Play on Your Xbox
On your Xbox Series X, go to Settings > Devices & Connections > Remote Features. Check the box to Enable Remote Features. This allows your console to stream audio and video to your phone. I also recommend testing the connection to ensure your network is stable.

  4. Start Remote Play in the Xbox App
Open the Xbox app and tap the Remote Play icon (it looks like a console with a signal). Select your Xbox Series X from the list of devices. Your console’s interface should appear on your phone’s screen, and the audio will route through your phone to your AirPods.

  5. Adjust Audio Settings
To use your AirPods’ microphone for party chat, join a party via the Xbox app. The app will automatically use your AirPods’ mic. If the audio sounds off, I tweak the game/chat audio balance in the Xbox app’s settings to prioritize game sound or voice chat as needed.

Use a Bluetooth Transmitter

If you want a more direct connection without relying on your phone, a Bluetooth transmitter is a fantastic option. This device plugs into your Xbox Series X or controller and transmits audio to your AirPods. I’ve tested this method with a few transmitters, and it’s my go-to for low-latency gaming.

  1. Choose a Compatible Bluetooth Transmitter
I recommend a transmitter with low latency and aptX support for better audio quality. The Avantree DG80, for example, works well with AirPods and supports dual-link for connecting two Bluetooth devices. Check that your transmitter has a 3.5mm jack or USB connection, depending on whether you’re plugging it into the controller or console.

  2. Connect the Transmitter to Your Xbox
If your transmitter uses a 3.5mm jack, plug it into the headphone port on your Xbox controller. For USB-based transmitters, connect it to one of the Xbox Series X’s USB ports. I prefer the controller method for simplicity, but USB transmitters often provide better power stability.

  3. Pair Your AirPods with the Transmitter
Put your AirPods in pairing mode by opening the case and holding the setup button until the light flashes white. Then, follow the transmitter’s instructions to enter pairing mode—usually by pressing a button until an LED blinks. Once paired, your AirPods should connect automatically.

  4. Test the Audio
Launch a game or play some music via the Xbox dashboard to test the audio. I played Forza Horizon 5 and was impressed by the rich sound of the car engines through my AirPods Pro. Adjust the transmitter’s settings (if available) to reduce latency or enhance volume.

  5. Enable Microphone Support (Optional)
Most Bluetooth transmitters don’t support AirPods’ microphone for party chat. If this is important, look for a transmitter with a built-in mic or use the Xbox app on your phone for chat while routing game audio through the transmitter.

Connect AirPods via Your Smart TV’s Bluetooth

If you game on a smart TV with built-in Bluetooth, you can pair your AirPods directly to the TV to hear Xbox audio. This method worked surprisingly well for me, especially since my Samsung QLED TV supports Bluetooth audio devices.

  1. Check Your TV’s Bluetooth Capabilities
Confirm that your TV supports Bluetooth audio output. I checked my TV’s manual and found it listed under “Sound Output” settings. Brands like Samsung, LG, and Sony often include Bluetooth in their smart TVs.

  2. Put Your AirPods in Pairing Mode
Open your AirPods case and press the setup button until the status light flashes white. Keep the case near the TV for easier pairing.

  3. Pair AirPods with Your TV
Navigate to your TV’s Bluetooth settings (usually under Settings > Sound > Bluetooth Devices). Select “Add Device” and choose your AirPods from the list. My Samsung TV paired my AirPods Pro in seconds, and the audio switched automatically.

  4. Test Xbox Audio Through the TV
Start your Xbox Series X and launch a game. The audio should route through your TV to your AirPods. I tested this with Cyberpunk 2077, and the dynamic head tracking of my AirPods made the cityscape feel alive.

  5. Handle Party Chat Separately
Since the TV routes only game audio, you’ll need another method for party chat. I used the Xbox app on my phone with a wired headset for chat while keeping game audio through my AirPods via the TV.

Use a Controller Adapter

Another option I explored is using a controller adapter designed for Bluetooth audio devices. These adapters plug into the Xbox controller’s 3.5mm jack and transmit audio to your AirPods. This method is similar to using a Bluetooth transmitter but is specifically tailored for Xbox controllers.

  1. Select a Controller Adapter
I used a third-party Bluetooth adapter designed for Xbox controllers, like the Skull & Co. AudioBox. Ensure the adapter supports low-latency Bluetooth and is compatible with AirPods.

  2. Connect the Adapter to Your Controller
Plug the adapter into the 3.5mm jack on your Xbox controller. Some adapters may require a USB connection for power—check the instructions. My adapter powered on with a single button press.

  3. Pair Your AirPods
Put your AirPods in pairing mode (open the case, hold the setup button until the light flashes white). Activate pairing mode on the adapter, usually by holding a button until an LED blinks. The devices should connect within seconds.

  4. Test the Audio
Play a game or navigate the Xbox dashboard to test the audio. I tested this setup with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and the audio was crisp with no noticeable lag.

  5. Microphone Workaround
Like Bluetooth transmitters, most controller adapters don’t support AirPods’ microphone. I used the Xbox app for party chat or opted for a separate wired mic plugged into the adapter (if supported).

Conclusion

Connecting AirPods to your Xbox Series X might seem daunting at first, but with the right method, it’s a game-changer.

Whether you choose the Xbox app for a no-cost solution, a Bluetooth transmitter for low-latency audio, a smart TV for simplicity, or a controller adapter for portability, you can enjoy the premium sound of your AirPods while gaming.

I’ve tested all these methods myself, and each offers unique benefits depending on your setup and preferences. My favorite is the Bluetooth transmitter for its balance of quality and convenience, but the Xbox app is perfect if you’re on a budget.

Whichever method you pick, follow the steps above, optimize your settings, and troubleshoot any issues to ensure a smooth experience. Now, you’re ready to dive into your favorite Xbox games with the crisp, immersive audio of your AirPods.
